FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
Find answers about extracting GPS coordinates, viewing EXIF metadata, and locating photos online safely and privately.
Does Trace Pic store my photos?
No. This is a privacy-first app. All processing — including location finding and metadata extraction — happens directly in your browser. Your images never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy.
What image formats are supported?
We support location and metadata extraction from most common image formats, including: JPEG, JPG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF, TIFF, HEIC, HEIF, JP2.
Is there a limit to the image size I can process?
Since the app runs entirely in your browser and devices have different capabilities, we set the limit so you can process one image at a time, with a maximum size of 100 MB, ensuring smooth performance.
Can I save the extracted metadata?
Yes! You can download metadata in TXT, PDF, JSON, or HTML format for easy sharing or documentation.
Is this tool free to use?
Absolutely! Trace Pic is completely free, with no hidden costs, or watermarks.
How to find photo location and metadata on my iPhone or android?
The process is the same for all devices! Just open this website in your mobile browser (like Safari or Chrome), select your photo, and let Trace Pic extract the data. If the photo was taken with location services enabled, the GPS data will be shown.
Can I install Trace Pic as a mobile or desktop app?
Yes! Trace Pic is a Progressive Web App (PWA). This means you can install it directly from your browser to your device's home screen (on mobile/tablet) or as a standalone application (on desktop) for a faster, app-like experience. No app store download is required. Look for an "Install" or "Add to Home Screen" prompt in your browser, or find the option in your browser's menu.
What if the photo location is not found?
If Trace Pic cannot display a location, it usually means the GPS metadata is missing from the file. This can happen for several reasons: • The image file simply doesn't contain any EXIF or GPS tags. • The photo was edited or compressed, which may strip out location metadata to reduce file size. • Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter) automatically remove location data for privacy when you upload or download images from them. • Location services were disabled on the camera or smartphone at the time the photo was taken. • The device used to capture the photo does not have a GPS sensor or support geotagging. Try another photo or check the full metadata for other clues, such as timestamps or camera details, to gain more insights about your photo.
Why is image processing slow sometimes?
To protect your privacy, TracePic processes all images locally in your browser. We never send your photos to a remote server to extract location or EXIF metadata. This means processing speed depends entirely on your device’s hardware and browser performance. For the fastest experience, we recommend using a modern browser on a PC or Laptop. Also note that larger image files will take longer to process.
